Thanks David. The huge volume of hateful misogyny and utter disrespect directed at the PM is so depressing and frightening even. I've reported multiple tweets for their implied violence in recent months. There was always plenty of criticism of JK on Twitter but the tenor of it was not nearly so personal, lunatic nor dangerous, so the underpinning sexism in all this feels to me like an attack on all women, especially those with the courage to stand for leadership roles. We've really been infected by maga-world mentality, to our detriment. There's a distinct lack of basic decency in those who can't just grant them some privacy and well wishes for their wedding. I do hope J&C have learned to ignore this stuff, as while its nonsense I imagine it must be truly awful to have such hatred directed towards you.
It’s become so that I’m suspicious of most news articles that I now open very few of them which may denigrate our PM and her role. At the same time it’s impressive how Jacinda never responds in kind. She’s always gracious and if ever she has to respond, acknowledging that others have different thoughts on whatever it is. This, of course, must drive those embittered to distraction. 😊

Good stuff, captures really well why this type of nonsense is an affront to common decency. There are at least two other issues. One is that as these personal attacks propagate the less likely any reasonable person will put themselves up for public office and the more likely we'll end up with a sociopath of some sort (45th President of the US for example).
At least as important is what a distraction this is from substantive policy issues. As just one example - the "Intergenerational Wealth Transfer" Bernard Hickey has so clearly described. It may have benefited many of the readers of this newsletter, myself included. But it's not going to be pretty for our children or grandchildren. Biodiversity and climate are in crises but suddenly it's all about who's paying for the PMs wedding...
