I cannot believe the number of f*ckwits whinging on Facebook right now about taxes. And when I took the opportunity to remind one or two of them about perhaps trying to see the bigger picture, well, the toxic drivel that came back was just unbelievable. And then on Chris Bishop's page there is all these revolting scum perpetrating all manner of nonsense about the prime minister's partner. Honestly I despair for much of this country ...

Cheers Renee. I’m already thinking about a second installment next week that explains what should need no explanation, because as I read this I’m reminded how a certain kind of voter just can’t seem to hang on to a grasp of first principles

The behaviour of many Kiwis at the moment reminds me of the movement against Dilma in Brazil. Misogyny and an irrational fear of communism was evident in that as well. Luckily we don't have the presidential system they have, or we could end up with a fascist in charge here as well. I'm not sure who the local equivalent of Bolsonaro would be, maybe Leighton Baker or the Eftpostle?

This whole tax thing annoys the hell out of me , ok I earned a good income last year and will do again this year , but I am happy to pay my bit so that my Daughters children (if they have any) have access to what my Daughters have had or anyone else's children deserve

It's not just tax rates, it's also value for tax. Feels like while we have great teachers like Miss Barry (and we do) then we are getting pretty good value. An actually progressive tax system would be even better value.

It concerns me that Luxon and proxies like Monster Mike are throwing around the "communism" word as that's pretty close to a dog-whistle to the newly radicalised protest crowd. Many of whom probably don't know what it actually means but it sounds like something bad the current government would get up to. National should be careful what they flirt with, they may end up with voters who show up in their offices with nooses demanding they hang Bill Gates.

Clarke seems like the sort of bloke who can laugh this sort of thing off and he's had to face worse to be honest. But it's unfair on his family, that's for sure. Politicians put themselves out there and deserve some public scrutiny (within reason). Just because he's on TV doesn't make Clarke a public property.

Dear Miss Barry, I would love to think I was half the teacher you are. I hope you are out there in droves, and that you are helping so many children through this quagmire. Wish I could send mythical you a care package. <3 Thank you, David, for inventing her.

Dear Ms Barry! Her students will understand how to think critically, and to fact check. But I'm concerned about Amelia (it was Amelia, wasn't it?), still not back at school. My fear is that she is having home schooling - a mind-bending thought. I'm just imagining her science lessons.

Thanks for that Jill. I too was wondering about Amelia. Was called yesterday by someone who doesn't want to make the long trip from the North down to Wellington to answer a trespass on Parliament grounds charge. It appears high principle has withered with this chap. He's prepared to plead guilty in a court nearer to his domicile. I was actually itching to tell him to stop fucking around with my day and call Sue Grey instead but nah. Lucky he fell short of crying for sympathy.

What a great teacher of a smart class!

Clarke has probably headed south to make a fishing programme about Endurance - Jacinda is a self-confessed Shackleton fanatic! https://www.tepapa.govt.nz/discover-collections/read-watch-play/history/ours-podcast/jacinda-arderns-antarctic-hero

Those calculations are generous given that many people don't spend 100% of their income, their KiwiSaver actually earns interest, and some have family tax credits, Working for Families, etc, etc. Is someone laying an official complaint about Hosking's blatant lies - after first contacting the broadcaster, etc, etc? His diatribe in today's Herald is also unvarnished Nat propaganda.

Actually Jacinda and Clarke will be happy to find out as much as they can about Endurance.

Despairing that the Nats still believe in trickle down economics. The only thing that trickles down is condescension, believe me.

There is one other thing trickles down.......surplus gush from Bidet-Boi Hosking.......as he seeks to sanitise yet another best buddy botty; the leader for the time being of the Aotearoa National Party. I'm sure he's angling for a highly funded posting that guy. Imagine the two of them being announced at Downton Abbey for the Charles and Camilla weekend. And the look on Maggie Smith's averted face.......🤣

Hate to say it but it appears there's a lot of Jackson's Dads around, judging by tonight's poll. Really can't believe Luxon's half-arsed promise of tax cuts & blather about "getting ahead" (of Māori reading between the lines) is being bought. But that's how we got into this mess in the first place.

The talent of the Right is persuading a large enough cohort of poor people that the reason they aren't rich is that the government is taking their money and giving it to other poor people, not that the rich have already taken it off them.

Although the bald LinkedIn hollow man and My Cockskin are talking absolute drivel, we do have a taxation system that is far from as progressive as it could be. Income tax and GST are not the only actors here. We also have fuel excise, student loan repayments, and rates. I remember the fuss Labour made when Key started taxing the first dollar we earn, calling it the paperboy tax. It's still there. Then we have the ruling out of CGT on property speculators. Where's Big Norm when we need him?

PS I ride a bicycle at times, but also need my ute for some things. I can't go and get firewood on a bicycle, for example.

You were a model of self-control. I would want to say, "you managed to get to Wellington for the protest, so you can #$%^&@! get there to face charges! Where are your wealthy funders now?"
