It is Film Review day at Kia Kaha Primary School!
It has been Film Review day three days this week.
Ms Barry says it is probably a good idea to stay inside and watch films because of all the Omicron.
Everyone has been catching the Omicron.
They have got sore throats and aching heads and they feel really tired
Some people used to say we won't get it we’re not like those Aucklanders who are full of it.
But now everybody is full of it.
Except for the protestors in Wellington.
They have got sore throats and aching heads and they feel really tired.
They think it is because Jacinda is pointing radio waves at them which she is getting off Clarke’s ankle monitor that the International Court of Justice put on him and the nanny.
But actually the protestors are full of it.
Who has a movie review to share? asks Ms Barry, what about you Kiera?
Kiera comes to the front and reads from her piece of paper,
Film Review by Kiera: Don't Look Up
Don't Look Up is about two scientists who find a huge comet coming for earth and it's going to hit in six months so they tell everyone and they think people will be like OMG.
But no-one is freaking out, because people are too busy doing their Insta and getting people to vote for them.
Even when you can see the comet in the sky, heaps of people are going don’t look up and don't be a woke Snowflake.
And then the comet hits and everyone dies except for a billionaire and his rich friends who gapped it in a spaceship.
And then Meryl Streep gets totally eaten by a dinosaur which is crackup.
Thank you Kiera, says Ms Barry, and what did you learn from Don't Look Up?
Kiera says,
well I was going to say that I thought they were making a point about climate change, like it's coming for us too but we’re not taking it seriously.
But I said that while we were watching it and Mum’s new friend Jason - said FFS Kiara weren't you listening to the scientists it's about an asteroid not climate change.
What did you say Kiara? asks Ms Barry.
Nothing Miss, says Kiara, I looked at Mum and she gave me a please don't babe look.
Ms Barry says,
Say hi to your Mum for me won't you, and check she still has my number?
It is Caleb’s turn.
Caleb reads out,
Film Review by Caleb: Idiocracy
Idiocracy is about this soldier in America. He is in a science experiment and when he wakes up it’s 500 years from now and everybody is unbelievably stupid. Like completely clueless and pushing big buttons on dumbed-down machines to make anything happen.
My Dad has watched it like 50 times, he says it makes him feel better and he doesn’t really know why, but maybe it’s just that he likes to hear it said out loud how dumb things have got instead of pretending they haven’t.
And also he says it feels like it's coming true even faster than we thought, like when they made the film in 2006, the ute-trucks they drove looked stupidly big but they’ve already got almost that size already.
And the news anchors on the TV were super-dumb and super-biased and they were topless too but if the dude had a jacket on you would probably think he was Ryan Bridge.
Thank you Caleb, says Ms Barry and what did you learn from it?
Caleb says,
Dad can be a snob but I think he’s got a point, especially when you look at what's happening in Wellington.
Everyone is quiet again.
They are thinking about Amelia who is still at the protest.
They are thinking about the stuff her Dad has been throwing.
And the song her Mum wrote and put on Facebook.
Now it is Grace’s turn.
Grace says,
Film Review by Grace: The Sound of Music
Mum really loves The Sound of Music but Dad can't stand it so when he goes out Mum says let's play it and it’s alright I suppose.
It’s about a nun who falls in love with a Dad who doesn’t want to be a Nazi, only that nearly happens to him near the end but up until then you think it’s just about all these cringe brothers and sisters who can’t stop singing. But then the Dad rips up a Nazi flag and they use a concert to run away. And if you like that kind of music it's alright I suppose but I would have liked to see Don't Look Up, it has Ariana Grande.
And what did you learn from it Grace? asks Ms Barry.
I don't know, if you're trying to trick Nazis, try music? says Grace.
That's good thinking says, Ms Barry
There is time for one more review.
Marc has a review!
Marc says
Film Review by Marc: Power of the Dog
Power of the Dog is about cowboys in Montana, only they are actually near the Central Otago Rail Trail.
But anyway there is a bully with a cowboy hat and he bullies everybody and you really hate him, and there's a boy and the cowboy keeps bullying him but then the boy does a clever thing but spoiler alert I won't tell you what.
Thank you for the spoiler alert Marc, says Ms Barry, and what did you learn from it?
Bullies are the worst and you probably shouldn't feel happy when you see one get crook as a dog but I did says Marc, it made me think of Sean.
Some of the children giggle. Sean used to be in Room 13. But now he is at Platform Prep For Difficult Boys. They are quite glad Sean left and they don't have to think about using a plot spoiler to make him crook as a dog or anything.
Ms Barry smiles but she doesn’t say anything.
I've increasingly come to love our Thursday visits to Kia Kaha school. You capture childhood thinking so well. Kids are naturally curious and tend to kindness, but many of our institutions and family environments stamp that out.
Taking a family member to a medical appointment today I went past the encampment here in Ōtautahi - in Cranmer Sq. Somewhat like a refugee camp, if refugees had flash tents, yurts, camper buses and portaloos. So many children visible. What are they doing all day? "Home schooled" I suppose. I just hope there's a way back for some of those young people.
I wish Miss Barry would come to Wellington and sort out these protestors and their poo flinging.
