Well, what a great column! And what brilliant technique from Seymour to avoid having any unguarded comments plastered all over Twitter for the next few weeks (or years maybe, like his twerking videos). I have heard Michele in action with her technique - most effective and entertaining. Kim Hill is another super-exponent of the art, usually without the humour. I await the final twist of the knife in breathless anticipation!
That David Seymour is 95% total shocker, and an unexpected 5% really fairly okay human. I was very surprised when he embraced the euthanasia bill, and pushed it with reason and humanity. And then he'll go and do or back something totally dippy, and I'm rolling my eyes again.
Anyone out there - can you see a philosophical right wing reason for his supporting the euthanasia bill? Freedom of choice??
I think it's basic libertarianism, which focuses uniquely on individual property rights. The owners of property must have the right to treat it and dispose of it as they see fit, and damn the societal consequences. This is easily extended to a view of us as our own property.
I share his support for euthanasia, but not his rationale.
I always thought he grabbed it as an issue that would get him lots of publicity and airtime and have people saying “maybe he’s not such a bad person after all”.
I started off thinking that, but there were interviews and details that made me question my deep cynicism. It went on for a long time, and as far as I remember, he never had an outburst of 'I'm a bastard' through all of it.

Interesting that Seymour happily undermines the dog whistling on gender issues (directly imported from US shock jocks) given that he regularly indulges in manufacturing perceptions of New Zealand in danger of being overrun by uppity Maori bent on destroying democracy.
So pleased you wrote about this. Charlie Mitchell’s article was a lovely surprise; it’s always good to see fact-based logic inserted into the public discourse. D Seymour ought to try it more often. Perhaps he’ll be like Hooton, and every year or two get something right. I’m less hopeful about that Edwards fellow...
With due respect .... 5% to David Seymour on this round. Great to be pleasantly surprised but then he did turn out to be a worthy Ak flat mate/house owner to a son-of-Moutere left-wing friends!
Not surprising at all... goes with 'I am master of my own fate, and fuck everybody else' ACT/Liberal ideology. Over the last eight years three of my friends (I'm 72 this August coming) that were dying of cancer have quietly saved their morphine tablets and offed themselves at home, before being subjected to cold and lonely institutional/hospitalized endings...and that is why they were my friends. They also never voted National or ACT in their lives....

Great song - love the Eurythmics.

I can see that. Yes - I agree with you.
I suppose the freedom to end one's own life is the ultimate in individual property rights.

Spot on John.

Who’da thunk Seymour had it in him?

Being a convertible owner , Love is a Stranger by the Eurythmics is an excellent track.
I read the article and was pleasantly surprised at what Seymour said, however he is still evil and must be resisted at all cost.
So...well, um...why are you, Mr Brennan, no longer tossing your mane and striding the lofty halls of RNZ?
Good. The first faint glimmers of resolute pushback. Glad you noted this, David.
Rimmer's agenda of wrongheadedness is completely different. I can only guess he is opposed to competing theories that also diverge from reality.
As for Bryce Edwards - well less than impressive in most things he writes.
"Lazy assumption, unfounded assertion; there’s a lot of it about." Good read.
I’d still like to kick Seymour in the pants. But good on you for giving him a break. Sounds like he earned it.

Seymour a house owner? When did that happen? He used to parade his non-ownership of a house as some sort of badge of honour.
‘Sure thang’ Michael … can get back to you via Unca Dave if you want dates/years
Happy to take your word for it and consider myself updated.
Indeed
DAVID SEYMOUR IS WOKE!!! /s
Great column. Glad to see a slither of logic in ACT thinking. I don’t mind who exposes the shock jocks.
A slither of logic! I like that image.
Beautiful word, slither, eh....
