The ending, oh the ending. The kids are all thinking about the grownups, who aren’t really thinking at all.

It’s the frustrating truth eh

So true to life! When you have kids in primary school you have a new appreciation for teachers. Not only are you trusting them with your precious offspring, but often with the family secrets as well. They must hear a lot of disturbing things, but as you've picked up on so skillfully David, some insightful things as well.

I’m most certainly channeling some recollection there :)

I have a 10-year-old and the ending made me cry. I appreciate your writing - gives a voice to my feelings.

Thank you as usual. The human 'cut through' and whimsical wit makes such a refreshing change to our normal media fare

Thank you David. It’s also refreshing to be able to come at this way tbh

Ha, a few hours before reading this replied to Suzie's word of the day Tweet:

Modern synonym: Twitter

Susie Dent @susie_dent · 17h | Word of the day (again) is ‘ultracrepidarian’ (19th century): one who gives opinions and judgements on matters they know nothing about.

More thoughtful nourishment for the mind - thank you.

Interesting that you had your Mr Brown calling someone a "little twerp" (a favourite term of my dear departed dad). Only a few hours ago I called a twit on Twitter, named Brown, that very thing after he tried to score some gratuitous political point because a gang leader was permitted to help stem the Covid tide within his tribe. I checked the dictionary definition and it was exactly what I meant: "a silly, insignificant, or contemptible person."

I have yet to divine whether your Ms Barry alludes to Hilary or Maggie.

He really is special, Mr Simeon. Guaranteed a showing tomorrow. And emphatically more Hillary than Maggie

“Twerp” was also a word that my Dad used.

Hey......Accounts Department.....haven't had my renewal invoice yet. I love 4.00 pm of a day ! Quentin McDonald......friends 40 years ago had a handsomely produced coffee table sort of book of the nude human form. One day the rather straight-laced paternal grandmother was visiting. "Nana, Mummy and Daddy got a great big book of cocks !" From a 7 year old now a lovely adult.

Steve, annual renewal is a few weeks off because I took those couple of breaks and the second time the whole system just stayed switched off for a further two weeks unbeknownst to any of us. Worse, when they turned it back on it began discarding monthly subscribers altogether at the end of their term. Nightmare. Anyway, long story short, it hasn’t reached anniversary yet and you don’t have to do anything when it does, it will just click over around the 1st of Nov. Hope that makes sense and, of course, huge appreciation for the support. Thank you.

Mr David......is Ms Barry aka Mr Soper ? Nah.....didn't think so. My Dad's from Delaware and he reckons Mr Soper's a pisshat and his wife's a asshat.

Steve - Your dad is quite correct but their daughter Sophie Soper is a superb person

It’s no one expressly but what I had loosely in mind was a bit of riffing on Hillary Barry and the teaching dimension to her family. Expect to see more of her!

Of all your marvellous columns this one is the most marvellous and my very favourite. I keep rereading it and am still chuckling. Very clever. Very perceptive. Bang on the money. Thank you for a job well done 👍

Not at all sure I'm comfortable with the inevitability that we'll all get Covid. It doesn't seem quite real. I'm double-vaxxed; everyone around me at home and at work is too. I feel extremely uncomfortable with that statement.
