James Smith’s cafeteria did asparagus rolls in white bread, ham and picalilli sandwiches and extremely gelatinous custard squares. All served by older women in house coats who hated you. This is also my experience of the Matterhorn in the 70s.
Oh The Matterhorn; the alluring laid-back glamour of the actual person Suzy; a high ceiling tearoom on a street off Lambton Quay, environs Kirkcaldies/DIC......echoes of clanging, banging EPNS teapots, glass topped wooden tables, chair legs squealing on the polished linoleum......behatted ladies pretending as cabinet ministers' wives. Could that explain the ostentatiously double parked CR plates sometimes seen outside? Not to forget the roast place Garlands upstairs above Vance Vivian cnr. Manners/Cuba, nor The Paramount, Courtenay Place, with its booth seating and 20 metres of steaming bains-marie full of hearty South European fare. For flash/showing off.....Pierres, Tinakori Road. Dear Wellington!
Hope your cold symptoms disperse quickly. In this world of Talibans and home grown creepy haters, it’s comforting to remember places like Suzy’s. I worked a couple of doors along from her establishment as a teenager and had my tastebuds educated. (Along with a lovely Greek run cafe in Courtenay Place where there was baklava in the cabinet, boxes of loukoumi in the window and strong coffee).

I will never understand picallili sandwiches
Can’t explain its appeal but I’ve always loved it

Thanks very much John. I have a memory of the Paramount Cafe being a lot like that - am I remembering rightly?
Nice juxtaposition of taliban attitudes and our own misogynists!
Cheers John. They’re far and wide and low
I'll admit to being guilty of book-hiding on occasion. https://youmustbefromaway.com/2016/03/17/now-you-see-it-2/
No jury would convict :)
Probably just Mondayitis - the column is healthy enough
That's reassuring to hear! Thanks Winston!
How different are our home grown misogynists to what is understandably alarming the world this week?
